Get to know these Indigenous changemakers, writers and artists. Read and connect with their stories:
- Geo Neptune is a Passamaquoddy Two-Spirit activist and storyteller. Neptune is also a master basket maker. They are known for their signature style of baskets that include a variety of materials. Read about them in Notable Native People, an illustrated book profiling and celebrating 50 notable Indigenous people.
- Lady Shug, also known as Ky Victor, is a member of the Diné (Navajo) Nation. They use she/her and they/them pronouns. Lady Shug is a drag persona and activist who has been fighting for equal rights for LGBTQ and Two-Spirit folks, specifically in rural areas and reservations. - Charlie Amaya Scott is part of the Diné (Navajo) Nation. She has a Ph.D. in Higher Education and uses her knowledge to be an advocate. Her work centers Black and Indigenous Queer and Trans Peoples. Get insight on who they are in My Life: Growing Up Native in America.
- Ma-Nee Chacaby is an Ojibwe-Cree activist and writer. A Two-Spirit Journey: The Autobiography of a Lesbian Ojibwa-Cree Elder takes you through Chacaby’s early life through adulthood. Learn about what they overcame and how this memoir provides insights into challenges still faced by many Indigenous people.
- Joshua Whitehead is a Two-Spirit writer who is an Oji-Cree member of the Peguis First Nation in Manitoba. In his debut poetry collection Full-metal Indigiqueer, Zoa the main character, is a Two-Spirit Indiqueer who reviews popular works of literature to re-center the lives of Two-Spirit individuals.
- Gabe Calderón, an author and artist with Mi’kmaq and Anishinabe ancestry, has won many literary awards. Màgòdiz is their first novel. It’s a story about a person in a ruined world who refuses allegiance to the ruler of their country.
