Kenton Library to close February 14 for vital updates as part of Refresh projects

Library will receive new paint, carpeting and furniture from this work

PORTLAND, Ore.– January 21, 2025

Kenton Library will close to the public on February 14 to start on a series of bond-funded improvements. Project teams expect the work to last until summer 2025.

Multnomah County Library is hard at work to build, expand and renovate library spaces for the public as a result of the voter-approved 2020 Library building bond. This year, the library system will see a dramatic reinvention by building and expanding five libraries and a series of Refresh projects to libraries across the system, requiring a series of temporary library closures.

The work at Kenton Library is a continuation of the Refresh projects, providing smaller but still important upgrades to 10 libraries on a shorter schedule than some other projects.

New features will include:

  • Improved shelf height to create more space for people and better sight lines
  • An inviting children’s area with new, movable furniture
  • An engaging teen area with plush seating and study tables
  • New, comfortable reading room chairs (both with and without arms) as well as new lounge chairs in the adult area
  • A Tech Bar which provides an area for patrons to use the copy machine, scanner and computers
  • New, lightweight meeting room chairs and tables
  • Fresh paint and new carpet for an updated, inviting experience

The community is invited to use nearby libraries while Kenton is closed:

North Portland Library (opening February 8 as an updated, expanded library): 512 N Killingsworth Street, Portland, OR 97217

Northwest Library: 2300 NW Thurman Street, Portland, OR 97210

The library understands that Kenton’s short-term construction, along with St. Johns’ longer term construction, will impact access. The project schedule for Kenton was sequenced after the opening of North Portland Library to provide access to library services in the North Portland region. The library is also providing temporary library services for St. Johns residents through the Mobile Library and at St. Johns Community Center. Complete details, including dates, times and locations, are available on the library temporary services web page. This page will continue to be updated as new services are introduced.
