We’re bringing your library into the modern era. Since Multnomah County voters approved the 2020 bond measure, we’ve been hard at work renovating and expanding multiple libraries, including HolgateMidlandNorth Portland and many more.

Woodstock Library closes for construction at the end of the day on March 17. It is scheduled to reopen in summer 2025. Woodstock is one of 11 libraries receiving small but essential refreshes to provide a safe, modern and welcoming space for library patrons. Similar projects at other libraries have taken about four months to complete.

New features include:

  • An inviting children’s space with fun movable animal chairs
  • A teen area for homework and creative expression
  • A designated spot for patrons to scan, copy and use library computers
  • Updated technology and meeting room furniture
  • Fresh paint and new carpet
  • And much more!

“We’re excited to update this library for our patrons,” says Director of Location Services Kirby McCurtis. “Closing for renovations can be disruptive, and we recognize that. The Hawthorne Holds location is a great option for picking up holds and checking out books, and Holgate Library has a variety of programming for the community to enjoy.”

While libraries like Woodstock are closed for construction, the library will provide temporary services for the community. Check out the temporary library services page for full, up-to-date information. Options include:

  • The Hawthorne Holds Pickup at 3557 SE Hawthorne Blvd. offers limited services like holds pick-ups, book returns, Lucky Day items and free wireless printing.
  • The newly built Holgate Library has all in-person services like storytimes, a teen room and much more.

Why are multiple libraries closed at the same time? It’s because we want you to get more for your money. The bond required the library to spend most of the funds in a short time. A slower schedule would have meant less money for library improvements and a higher cost due to inflation and supply chain issues. By closing libraries at the same time, we can create spaces to best serve our community with the funds available.

We’re excited to share these updated libraries with you!
