As part of the library’s capital bond passed by voters in November 2020, North Portland Library’s historic Carnegie building was renovated and expanded to 10,200 square feet. Community input shaped every aspect of the updates from the color scheme and furniture to the artwork and community spaces.

Gifts to The Library Foundation supported the creation of an interactive early learning space and a mobile creative learning lab for the family to enjoy.

Other new features include:

  • The library’s first Black Cultural Center
  • Outdoor space to relax and connect
  • New collections for an engaging reading and browsing experience
  • Updated technology and modern self-checkout stations
  • New art representing the community
  • And more!

Centering the community

Built in 1912, North Portland Library is a cornerstone of the Black community in Portland. These updates would not have been possible without community input. Through focus groups, workshops and more, we engaged with over 3,500 people to shape how North Portland Library can best represent and celebrate the community. The community chose interior colors that are inspired by Afrofuturism and the Black imagination. You can find royal blues with golden accents throughout the library, celebrating Black excellence in the past, present and future.

In addition, 27 teens who use North Portland Library took part in the Youth Opportunity Design Approach (YODA) paid program. In sessions led by architects and youth librarians, the teens shared what would help them feel welcome and engaged at the library.

Theo, a junior in high school and participant in the YODA program, shared how learning about architecture inspired him to explore other features of building design, including engineering and mechanics. “This made me think about the concept that everything in the building has something to offer,” says Theo. “Whether that be functional or aesthetic.”

The library’s first Black Cultural Center

Feedback and insights from the Black community were crucial for the new Black Cultural Center at North Portland Library. The Center is the first of its kind for Multnomah County Library. It will offer a place for community and a celebration of Blackness in North Portland and beyond.

The Black Cultural Center features new art from local Black artists, two of whom worked in partnership with the Regional Arts & Culture Council. Sadé DuBoise created cosmic artwork installed on large glass panels and Melanie Stevens created wood carvings highlighting four Black Afrofuturist authors. Working with the design team, Kayin Talton Davis created a mural for the stairwell at the entryway. The Center connects to a new deck, providing a beautiful outdoor space for patrons to enjoy at the library.
